1. Design Unbound: Designing for Emergence in a White Water World (Infrastructures)

Description

Tools for navigating today's hyper-connected, rapidly changing, and radically contingent white water world.

Design Unbound presents a new tool set for having agency in the twenty-first century, in what the authors characterize as a white water worldrapidly changing, hyperconnected, and radically contingent. These are the tools of a new kind of practice that is the offspring of complexity science, which gives us a new lens through which to view the world as entangled and emerging, and architecture, which is about designing contexts. In such a practice, design, unbound from its material thingness, is set free to design contexts as complex systems.

In a world where causality is systemic, entangled, in flux, and often elusive, we cannot design for absolute outcomes. Instead, we need to design for emergence. Design Unbound not only makes this case through theory but also presents a set of tools to do so. With case studies that range from a new kind of university to organizational, and even societal, transformation, Design Unbound draws from a vast array of domains: architecture, science and technology, philosophy, cinema, music, literature and poetry, even the military. It is presented in five books, bound as two volumes. Different books within the larger system of books will resonate with different reading audiences, from architects to people reconceiving higher education to the public policy or defense and intelligence communities. The authors provide different entry points allowing readers to navigate their own pathways through the system of books.

3. Pragmatic Imagination

Description

Pragmatic Imagination is a small book that presents a valuable resource for navigating our broadly connected, rapidly changing, and radically contingent world. It begins from an assumption that agency in the world today requires a productive entanglement of imagination and action. It then presents a framework for unpacking the imagination as a wide range of mental activity that can be put to purpose in this world. This is the Pragmatic Imagination - a concept and framework of six principles.

This book is the last chapter of a larger work. It is both parent and child of a soon to be published five-book book called Design Unbound: Designing for Emergence in a White Water World, which provides a tool set for agency and impact in our world today. Like a single released before an album, this previews the larger work, introducing concepts and themes that both anticipate and encapsulate the larger project. But also like a single, it can stand alone because of the way in which it anticipates and encapsulates the larger project with a singular coherence.

4. Hubert Le Gall: Design Unbound

Description

Taking his inspiration from decorative forms from the past, Hubert Le Gall creates furniture that is at once poetic and functional, such as his 'Pot de Fleurs' chair and 'Goutte d'herbe' commode, juxtaposing ideas in surprising ways and playing on shape, light and colour. While he works in a variety of materials, including wood, glass, resin and ceramic, his favourite medium is bronze. Following a period inspired by botanical forms, he is currently exploring a poetic bestiary.

Hubert Le Gall's work embellishes contemporary restaurants, private living spaces and the dining room of the Mayor of Paris. Since 1996 it has been displayed at the Avant-Scne gallery in Paris. Numerous pieces are now in museum collections, including the Muse des Beaux Arts in Montreal, the Muse des Arts Dcoratifs in Paris and the Muse de La Piscine in Roubaix.

Text in English and French.

5. Public Space Unbound: Urban Emancipation and the Post-Political Condition (Routledge Research in Planning and Urban Design)

Description

Through an exploration of emancipation in recent processes of capitalist urbanization, this book argues the political is enacted through the everyday practices of publics producing space. This suggests democracy is a spatial practice rather than an abstract professional field organized by institutions, politicians and movements.

Public Space Unbound brings together a cross-disciplinary group of scholars to examine spaces, conditions and circumstances in which emancipatory practices impact the everyday life of citizens. We ask: How do emancipatory practices relate with public space under post-political conditions? In a time when democracy, solidarity and utopias are in crisis, we argue that productive emancipatory claims already exist in the lived space of everyday life rather than in the expectation of urban revolution and future progress.

6. TeX Unbound: LaTeX and TeX Strategies for Fonts, Graphics, and More

Description

LaTeX is the premier software system used for presenting scientific and technical information on the printed page, being the system of choice for writers in mathematics, the sciences, computer science, and engineering. It is also increasingly used by nontechnical writers interested in superior printing and document presentation. Authors wishing to take full advantage of this powerful software often have questions that go beyond how to use the basic style files or commands. For example, how can you integrate any of the high quality commercial fonts that are available? How can you typeset mathematics in anything other than the original TeX fonts? How can you generate complex graphics for use in a LaTeX document? What Internet resources are available to a LaTeX author? How can you connect TeX and LaTeX to everyday office software? In general, writers need clear, accurate, and concise instructions, solutions, and explanations for common problems and situations. This unique book provides this assistance, containing many examples and summaries of procedures to follow. TeX Unbound will be the reference of choice for every writer wishing to express technical information.

7. Judith Scott: Bound and Unbound

Description

This fascinating and generously illustrated book offers an in-depth look at the art and life of Judith Scott, and accompanies the first major exhibition of her artworks in the U.S. Judith Scotts story has become widely known: born with Down syndrome, and institutionalized for thirty years, before moving to the Bay Area to be near her twin sister, Scott had long-hidden artistic sensibilities that were first discovered at the visionary Creative Growth Art Center in Oakland. There, she developed an affinity for fiber and other found materials, creating remarkable and idiosyncratic objectsfastidiously assembled structures that radically challenge our attempts to define them as sculpture. In addition to illustrations of more than forty essential works, this volume includes a number of essays that trace Scotts artistic development and her place within the field of contemporary art as a whole. A previously unpublished interview with Scotts twin sister, Joyce, tells the story of how Judiths move from relative isolation to a supportive and nurturing environment allowed an unexpected and extraordinary talent to emerge and flourish.
