1. Rounded Up in Glory: Frank Reaugh, Texas Renaissance Man

Description

Frank Reaugh (18601945; pronounced Ray) was called the Dean of Texas artists for good reason. His pastels documented the wide-open spaces of the West as they were vanishing in the late nineteenth century, and his plein air techniques influenced generations of artists. His students include a Whos Who of twentieth-century Texas painters: Alexandre Hogue, Reveau Bassett, and Lucretia Coke, among others. He was an advocate of painting by observation, and encouraged his students to do the same by organizing legendary sketch trips to West Texas. Reaugh also earned the title of Renaissance man by inventing a portable easel that allowed him to paint in high winds, and developing a formula for pastels, which he marketed. A founder of the Dallas Art Society, which became the Dallas Museum of Art, Reaugh was central to Dallas and Oak Cliff artistic circles for many years until infighting and politics drove him out of fashion. He died isolated and poor in 1945.
The last decade has seen a resurgence of interest in Reaugh, through gallery shows, exhibitions, and a recent documentary. Despite his importance and this growing public profile, however, Rounded Up in Glory is the first full-length biography. Michael Grauer argues for Reaughs importance as more than just a longhorn painter. Reaughs works and far-reaching imagination earned him a prominent place in the Texas art pantheon.

3. Windows on the West: The Art of Frank Reaugh

Description

Artist, educator, inventor, and naturalist, Charles Franklin Reaugh (18601945), pronounced Ray, is one of the Southwests earliest and most distinguished artists. Working in the vein of American Impressionism, Reaugh devoted his career to visually documenting the immense unsettled regions of the Southwest before the turn of the twentieth century. Drawing on more than one hundred artworks from the Harry Ransom Centers Frank Reaugh collection, as well as public and private collections across the state, the book examines Reaughs mastery of the pastel medium and his sophisticated yet direct approach to landscape painting, particularly the challenges of painting outdoors.

Born in Illinois, Reaugh arrived in Texas by covered wagon in 1876 at the age of fifteen and, by the early 1880s, was sketching scenes while riding with cattlemen during the height of Texass historic roundups. The shimmering opalescent color of the vast southwestern plains became a lifelong subject of study for Reaugh, as did the native longhorn, the main protagonist in his visual narrative of the West. A restless and intrepid traveler, Reaugh took sketch trips with students to some of Texass most spectacular and remote locations almost annually for over fifty years, producing hundreds of colorful and mesmerizing pastel studies.

Seven contributors knowledgeable in the field of early Texas art and art of the American Southwest discuss Reaughs life and long career in this beautifully illustrated book. Their essays offer new insights into this fascinating and resourceful man who is often called the Dean of Texas Artists.
