Description

Love Letter for Fire is a collaboration between Sam Beam (aka Iron and Wine) and singer-songwriter Jesca Hoop. The thirteen-track album features the singles Every Songbird Says and Valley Clouds, and was written throughout 2014. Love Letter for Fire features Beam and Hoop on vocals and guitar along with Robert Burger (keys), Eyvind Kang (violin, viola), Glenn Kotche (drums, percussion), Sebastian Steinberg (bass) and Edward Rankin-Parker (cello). The album also features a cover photo by Sam Beam. As Iron and Wine, Sam Beam recorded for Sub Pop from 2002-2007, releasing a number of highly-acclaimed albums, singles, and EPs, including The Creek Drank The Cradle (2002), Our Endless Numbered Days (2004), Woman King (2005) and The Shepherds Dog (2007). He went on to record for Warner Brothers, Nonesuch, and 4AD. Recent releases include a covers album with Ben Bridwell from Band of Horses, and the two-volume Archive Series, which features material that preceded Sams Sub Pop-era recordings. Jesca Hoop is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist. She is an incredible live performer, known for her wonderfully-eclectic take on folk, rock, and electronic music. Hoop has released five albums and two EPs, including the critic favorites Hunting My Dress and The House That Jack Built. Jesca has toured and collaborated with the likes of Shearwater, Willy Mason, Blake Mills, Andrew Bird, The Ditty Bops, Guy Garvey, and Elbow, and has recorded for Bella Union and Vanguard. Love Letter for Fire was produced, recorded and mixed by Tucker Martine (Modest Mouse, Decemberists, Neko Case) at Flora Recording & Playback in Portland, OR and mastered by Richard Dodd in Nashville, TN.

5. Hunting My Dress

Description

U.S. vinyl LP pressing. 2010 sophomore album from the singer/songwriter. Titled Hunting My Dress, the stunning collection finds the California native meditating on her recent move to Manchester, England, where Hoop received a heroine's welcome thanks in part to an endorsement by one of her most devoted fans, Guy Garvey of the widely respected U.K. rock act Elbow. Garvey contributes guest vocals to 'Murder of Birds'.

6. House That Jack Built

Description

The House That Jack Built deftly showcases Jesca Hoop's unflinching tendency to pull focus from widescreen to close-up. Part siren song, part grim warning, it achieves a perspective-warping balance between the haunting intimacy of Hoop's delivery and an unconfined air of horizon-scanning grandeur from the outset -- tempestuous, moodily melodic opener 'Born To' shares this striking duality with later highlights 'When 'm Asleep', 'Peacemaker' and 'Deeper Devastation'.

7. Memories Are Now (Includes Download Card)

Description

Jesca Hoops new album Memories Are Now, out February 10th on Sub Pop Records, wastes no time in making clear its confidence, confrontation, and craftsmanship. The stark and reverberant title track opens the album with a fighting spirit, says Hoop, serving as an anthem to push through any obstacle and put forth your very best work. And she has unequivocally done that here, with an album of stunningly original songs--minimalist yet brimming with energy, emerging from a wealth of life experience, great emotional depth, and years of honing the craft of singing. As riveting as it is reflective, the album, produced by Blake Mills (Fiona Apple, Alabama Shakes), is a fresh debut of sorts for Hoop, as the first of her solo records made outside of Tony Bergs Zeitgeist Studios where she and Mills were mentored. Says Hoop, Blake is so utterly musical and emotionally intelligent in his expression. I wanted to see what we could do, just he and I out from under Tonys wing. Mills pushed her to strip away layers, keeping it as close to the live experience as possible, using whole live takes and working very quickly. It's still covered in embryonic fluid, for lack of a better way to put it, says Hoop. However fast the work, Memories Are Now covers a great deal of ground, showcasing every edge and curve of Hoops captivating voice, with sounds and themes ranging from the mythic to the deeply intimate. She sings of the religion that weighs heavily on her past and the world, of the imagination of myth, of the cruel nature of life and love. The defiance that permeates Memories Are Now is both a product and necessity of a career that has been independently driven and self-funded from the beginning. All of my successes have been won on the grassroots level, with handshakes and hugs from great people who believe in me, says Hoop, more than a decade into her career and with new paths to forge. As she sings in the title track, I've lived enough life, I've earned my stripes. Thats my knife in the ground, this is mine. --Evie Nagy

8. Super Genuine

Description

Vinyl LP pressing. Music fans are thirsty for songs that help them process their frustrations with modern relationships. Super Genuine, the debut from Seattle four-piece Hoop, is a soft rock album for people who are sorting out unhealthy power dynamics, whether it's with a friend, a partner, a family member, an authority figure, or the dystopian reality we all live in. Hoop began as a recording project between songwriters and multi-instrumentalists Caitlin Roberts (Autococoon) and Nich Wilbur (Hungry Cloud Darkening) at Wilbur's studio The Unknown in Anacortes, WA, while Roberts was living in town for eight months in 2014. The recording exhibits sparse yet driving instrumentation and calm distortion, iced with Roberts' moody, deliberate vocal performance, and Allyson Foster's (Mount Eerie, LAKE, Stephen Steinbrink) hi-fi ear-candy vocal cameos. Super Genuine is grunge nostalgia augmented by the emotional intelligence of a 21st-century feminist and the sensibilities of a skilled producer. By the end of the first half of the record, the emotive undercurrent has only tugged at the listener's toes. The songs on Side B are deeply personal and startlingly vulnerable. The arc of the album details Roberts' struggle to trust her instincts, stand up for herself, and be authentic in a verbally abusive relationship.

9. Cock-A-Hoop [VINYL]

Description

The 10th Studio Album in a 35 year career sees this Classic British Band finesse their ribald recipe of roots randomness into a carnival of colour, sound and surrealism. Recorded with producer Jim Knight at the old home studio of the legendary Kirsty MacColl in leafy Ealing, this collections of ballads, rants and shanties mixes folk and pop, rock and reel, rhythm and roll, blues and soul and gives it a damn good shaking. The Men They Couldn't Hang have long mixed poignant political epics with potent frenzy, once being compared to a 'riot in a fairground'. Those qualities are not only present but super charged in the melodic blizzards of Pone and Sirens ; knuckleduster vocals, jet powered harmonies and martial mandolins all present. Ballads like Four Winds Blow and Three Ships Sailing continue the knack for widescreen mythology, evocations of past and future, while The Amazing Carrier Bag goes through the looking glass and down the rabbit hole with a Kinksian take on the surreal whimsy of Brexit and the punk rock autobiographical anthem Right Time, Right Place, Right Song puts it all into perspective with Cheshire Cat peek into the secret of The Men They Couldn't Hang enduring success and longevity. In short this new album finds the Peter Pan vitality of TMTCH fighting fit and full of vim. It sounds like a big party; a ceilidh on mescalin, a wild, weird and wandering voyage of discovery, gone over the borders and out to the sea. And still the band plays on.
