'Shade,' their first album since the critically acclaimed 'The Chair in the Doorway' in 2009, is Living Colour at the height of their creative powers, still experimenting as though they were upstarts instead of seasoned veterans. While the blues served as the foundation for the collection, one shouldn't expect to hear the 'down-home' style that was once the soundtrack of sharecroppers and southern juke joints before the music rode the rails north during the Great Migration. Living Colour's blues incorporate a myriad of influences, while speaking to the politically-charged climate of the times.'What better way to talk to the world than through the blues?' vocalist Corey Glover asks. 'We recorded 'Preachin' Blues' several times to jump start the project and that got everybody fired up. After that, we were ready. 'Shade,' in its final outcome, is more of a deconstruction of the blues than an interpretation. It was the idiom that gave us our voice.'
Produced by Andre Betts who first worked with Living Colour on their album 'Stain' in 1993 he would spend five years in the studio with the band perfecting the project. Initially introduced to Living Colour by their bassist Doug Wimbish, Betts was more than ready to face the challenge of working with such perfectionists.
'Making records is an art and a process, and sometimes it can be easier to herd cats,' Wimbish laughs. 'But, when it connects and we come together, it's a beautiful thing. 'Shade' is a testimony to who Living Colour is, to our chameleon quality.'
Without a doubt, that quality comes across clearly on the 13-track effort. 'Shade' is a sonic journey that careens from the furor of 'Blak Out,' an old school thrasher that struts with a gangster boogie to 'Program,' a searing, socially-spiked cocktail that nods to the band's iconic hit 'Cult of Personality.' Stand-out tracks such as the acid funk balladry of 'Two Sides' (complete with a guest appearance by George Clinton) and the afro-punk fireworks of 'Glass Teeth,' prove Corey Glover's vocals to be stronger than ever, while Vernon Reid, long acknowledged as one of the most creative guitarists in modern rock, lives up to his reputation on album opener 'Freedom Of Expression (F.O.X.)' and the soul blues of 'Who's That?' Drummer Will Calhoun points to 'Invisible,' which pays homage the late Buddy Miles, among his favorites on the album.

In 1988, few heavy metal bands were comprised of all black members, and fewer had the talent or know-how to inject different musical forms into their hard rock sound (funk, punk, alternative, jazz, soul, rap) - but N.Y.C.'s Living Colour proved to be an exception. Unlike nearly all of the era's metal bands, the group's music has held up over time, thanks to it's originality and execution. Living Colour leader/guitarist Vernon Reid spent years honing his six-string chops, and was one of the most respected guitarists in New York's underground scene. He couldn't have done a better job selecting members for his new rock band - singer Corey Glover, bassist Muzz Skillings, and drummer Will Calhoun - as their now-classic debut, Vivid, proves. Though the album was released in mid-1988, it picked up steam slowly, exploding at the year's end with the hit single/MTV anthem "Cult of Personality," which merged an instantly recognizable Reid guitar riff and lyrics that explored the dark side of world leaders past and present (and remains LC's best-known song). The album was also incredibly consistent, as proven by the rocker "Middle Man" (which contains lyrics from a note penned by Glover, in which he pondered suicide), the funky, anti-racist "Funny Vibe," the touching "Open Letter (To a Landlord)," plus the Caribbean rock of "Glamour Boys." Living Colour will release their first new studio album in five years entitled The Chair In The Doorway on September 15 via Megaforce Records. Living Colour formed in NYC and still contains the original members Vernon Reid, Corey Glover, Will Calhoun and (since 1993) Doug Wimbish.The legendary downtown NYC rock band, who exploded out of CBGB's in the late '80s and landed all over MTV, the cover of Rolling Stone and stadium stages around the world with their Grammy Award-winning, multi-platinum debut album Vivid, are back and "fierce" as ever. The band gathered at Sono Studios outside of Prague in The Czech Republic during the fall of 2008 and spring of 2009 to write and record what would become The Chair In The Doorway. The results stretch from the modern soul anthem "Behind The Sun" to the politically-charged, heavy rock of "DecaDance to the sacred steel blues of "Bless Those. The artwork for The Chair In The Doorway was compiled from thousands of contest entries by fans from around the world.
"We feel like this is the best record we've made yet and we couldn't be more excited to be releasing it with the legendary Megaforce Records," says guitarist Vernon Reid. "Some of our favorite bands were or are Megaforce artists, Metallica, Bad Brains, Anthrax, Black Crowes, so it's an honor to be part of a label with a great legacy."
Living Colour will announce plans for a world tour shortly. With dates set to begin in September, it will include their first North American tour in four years along with performances in South America, Europe, Australia and Asia.
Having helped to pave the way for a number of contemporary African-American artists to follow in their wake, ranging from Rage Against The Machine to Lenny Kravitz to Ben Harper, with a multi-dimensional sound that drew equally from Jimi Hendrix, Bad Brains, Talking Heads and Ornette Coleman, the success of Living Colour broke down the color barriers in rock music. Guitarist and founding member Vernon Reid also founded the Black Rock Coalition to use his influence to further this cause.
Discovered by Mick Jagger who produced their first demo and later offered them an opening slot with The Rolling Stones, Living Colour would go on to create a repertoire that includes a multitude of classic songs, including "Cult Of Personality," "Elvis Is Dead," "Open Letter To A Landlord," "Glamour Boys" and "Love Rears Its Ugly Head." With The Chair In The Doorway, the fifth album of their storied career, Living Colour expands the scope of their timeless body of work and, in the process, proves vital as ever.
